Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 580)

Welcome to the Australia Immigration Visa Services Student Visa section. The Guardian Visa is part of Australia's provision for the welfare of overseas students who travel to Australia for education.

The Guardian Visa allows a parent or other close family member to accompany a student or students while they undertake their Australian education, particularly the age group under 18 who are here to study at high school. The new Guardian Visa, introduced in January 2004, replaces the old Long Stay Visitor Visa, 686 which was previously used for family members in guardianship role.

The total number of students in Australia on 1st January 2006 was 152, 622, an increase of 18, 484 from the same date in 2005.

The increase comes from the area that already has the longest enrolment: North East Asian countries of China., Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. This are has 61,750 students studying in Australian schools, colleges and universities. The second largest area is South East Asia. The student population from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the smaller countries in this region is approximately half of the North East Asian intake, at 29,169.

Thirdly, we have a student population of 24,615, from South East Asia, followed by less than half of that from Europe at 11,663.

There is no world region where the student populations in Australia fell in the 2005-2006 period, except Oceania where the number fell by just 2 comparing the beginning of 2005 to 31st December 2005.
